Familiarize yourself with zoning to save on home services and utility bills

A little knowledge goes a long way in improving your life if you know where to look and what to do with the information.

  • I am not much of a reader but I am a keen listener to what people say or talk about.

And this one time, I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Mark, who is my neighbor, was out for a walk and we crossed paths. However, I did not say hi because he was on the phone but I managed to overhear his conversation. It sounded like he was talking to an HVAC technician about his utility bill. Based on the complaint, I thought he was addressing the wrong person but I realized the conversation was about his air conditioner and how much it has been overworking to provide good air quality. When I caught up with him later, he opened up about his ac repair. A while back, Mark had upgraded his air conditioning system to include an all inclusive HVAC unit. He had the ductwork done by an HVAC company different from the one that installed his ac filter and other small fittings. Although the air duct was fitted well it turned out that he got the incorrect equipment for his house square footage. Based on his zone area, he needed a 2.5 ton instead of a 1.5 ton. Obviously it did not help with indoor comfort as he had hoped. The result was frequent home services and unusually high HVAC maintenance cost. This is until the HVAC professional came to his rescue and helped him out with the oversight. That conversation got me thinking and I ended up checking mine just to be sure.
