During the day, I work as an HVAC repair technician.
- I went to school for 18 months to learn heating and air conditioner repairs and installation work.
When I finished with school, it took about 3 months before I found a job. Nobody wanted to give someone a chance that was just out of school. All of the heating and air conditioner repair companies wanted someone with experience and all I had was schooling. I was lucky to find a commercial heating and AC company that would give me a chance. I had to work with a mentor for the first three months. I hated working with someone else, because I prefer to work alone. That is one of the reasons why I decided to become an HVAC repair technician in the first place. I knew that I wouldn’t have a boss breathing down my neck all day and I would be alone and on my own for the most part every single day. After I passed all of my safety training and finished the three months with the mentor, I started working on my own. At first the boss gave me easy to complete jobs like HVAC tune- ups and simple repairs. Slowly, I have been working my way up the chain so I can get bigger and better jobs that are more fun and interesting. Of course, all of that went out the window last night when I had my toolbox stolen out of the heating and AC repair truck. I left the back door open for a second while I gave the customer the invoice and my tools were gone when I came back.
