When I was 13 years old my parents took me to the doctor because I started having issues breathing during the night.
They were super scared because I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air.
Once we went to the doctor I was informed that I had asthma. I knew that living with asthma would not be fun, but it was something that I would have to deal with. I’m very sensitive to air quality and I have to make sure that while I’m at home the thermostat is set to a perfect temperature. So when I decided that I wanted to go away for college and live in a dorm with my parents, I was really nervous. He told me that I had never lived alone and it might be a reality check for me, I had already spoken with the college I wanted to go to and they let me know I’d be able to have my own room and control my own thermostat. I was actually pretty excited to have my own dorm because normally it’s only reserved for the older kids. Being able to control the air-conditioning in my room and have my own thermostat was game changing for me and my asthma. I was so excited to be able to go to college. I’ll be able to live on my own without my parents watching my every move. I love them but sometimes they can be quite overbearing when it comes to my asthma.
