Sitting in front of a fireplace or in a home with central heat can make you feel less sad.
One of the things I have noticed since I moved to the south, is that people get angrier when it is extremely hot outside. I noticed this at first in my career as a teacher. Physical fights at school seemed to increase during the months with hot and humid weather. I also noticed this with adults. Where I live people are typically nice, move at a slow and relaxed pace, and typically do not honk the horn or rush things. However, in the summer the feel is often different. I have noticed that people want to get out of the heat so they get really agitated. Air conditioning can help people be less angry in the summer. If you have ever felt angry for no reason when it is hot out, chances are you just need to cool down in the air conditioning. When I lived up north, I noticed that people got more depressed in the cold months. When it gets dark early and it hurts your face to just walk outside, it can make you feel really isolated and sad. Sitting in front of a fireplace or in a home with central heat can make you feel less sad. Even putting your feet on radiant heated floors can boost your mood. If you notice that air conditioning and heat are not helping you feel better in the summer and winter, you may be experiencing seasonal depression. If you are experiencing seasonal depression, your doctor will be able to help come up with a plan to help you get through the extreme heat and cold.
